Doc created the tune in 2009, and when he played it for Meryl in 2024, she said it made her think of a train. Doc's favorite childhood toy was his wooden train set, and he remembered his old picture book about "The Little Engine That Could". He imagined a steam locomotive trying to haul a heavy load up a steep grade while repeating "I can do it, I can do it.". After that, the lyrics to the song practically wrote themselves.

"The Fiddler of Chaplin” is a dream-like musical story. It starts slowly and tentatively as the dreamer tiptoes cautiously into the forest, enticed by ethereal and lilting notes that depict a scene in the “dark and secret woods”. Dancers appear and become enchanted by the fiddler’s playing. They gradually begin to shed their emotional baggage as the tempo accelerates, and the dancing becomes more frenzied. The music fades out as the dreamer awakens and returns to reality.
